Mr and Miss International 2008!

Attended the 'Mr and Miss International 2008' event last night hosted by the SIMS, Southampton International Medical Society . Though I am not an international student. Having had bought the ticket very reluctantly, I was not planning to go to the event as of the work load I have got to do. Not just the studies but also some other work, like packing and cleaning due to the process of moving house!! Very hard work. I think I am getting used to moving houses, and by the time I graduate I will be an expert in knowing the processes of moving house step by step. I did not want my parents to come down to help me as this becomes a routine kind of thing every year.

Coming back to the SIMS, this was my second event of the international medics to attend. I had been to the last year's event as well somewhere around in March if I am right. As I said earlier, I did not want to go but changed my mind in the last min. because my friends were too worrying that I was going to miss the entertainment! Haha, no, I just thought I should join them and not miss out the great time. The chief guests of the event were; Dr Ram Sharma, Dr Alan Noble and Prof. David Wilson. The event commenced with a Pakistani dance followed by Bharatanattiyam. I should mention about the bharatanatyam dance. That, it was done by a tamil and a malaysian girl. She is not a trained bharatanatyam dancer but learned the steps for this performance for SIMS and she did it very well. But I don't know why did they choose to get a malaysian girl for bharatanatyam while there are a number of students who are trained bharatanattiyam dancers. Ah well!

The most interesting part of the event was the competition between the performances of different countries. The Sri Lankan students represented the country by a dance for the songs Thaam Thakka Theem and Yennatha Solvenunga. It was simply superb! They did the same performance for the University of Southampton Tamil Society's event a couple of months ago. Very energetic and outstanding performance it was! And to underline that, am proud to say that Sri Lankan performance was chosen as the best performance of the night by Prof. David Wilson who judged the show :) All the performances were exhilarating and had a good time throughout the entire event!

i thought that the malaysian gal who danced for the bharatanatyam was really good and, its good that they chose here. since bharathanatyam is an ancient and religious dance i think every one in this world should recognize it and respect it, and the only way of gaining that is through this method!!!!! and also since it is a multicultural program its good that a malaysian gal volunteered to perform the dance!!!!

±±±±± not forgetting even for the tamil/srilankan dance, not every one was Srilankan. 3 of them were not even tamil!!!! so again its a multi-cultural show, so i am glad they did that!!!!!!!!

Bravenan!

Bravenan :
Yeh, agreed bravenan! She was of course good. I respect your point from the multicultural-view and yes, it is indeed a good way for the world to recognise the beauty of our ancient culture!

But I just wanted to draw the point that a trained bharatanatyam dancer would have done better because she had only learnt the specific steps and I don't think she would know the basics behind it. However, I still amaze and appreciate her contribution into it.
Thanks for the comment :))
