Hope the new year is treating you all well so far. I have started uni this week but it already feels like a long time. Teaching sessions for the last two days were cancelled, most annoyingly after getting to the hospital all the way from so'ton to winchester. It is snowing heavily in the south with lightening and driving is gonna be impossible tomorrow especially on the motorways. Even if the weather gets better, I am not taking the risk. Don't want to skid and hit, and no way I am ready to face a huge cost of repair. Above everything, a cough is bothering me for two days now. Not liking it a bit.

I had been to London Eye with friends to watch the fireworks on new year midnight. It was absolutely stunning although the fireworks were for only 10 mins. But I hated going through so much hassle to get back home. It took us almost 3 hours in the crowd to walk to the train station which would normally take only 5 mins. The amount of people who came was crazy! The police could have been much more organised, I guess. Waiting for 3 hours in an almost-not-moving queue to get into a station was driving everyone mad. Finally we got home around 4am. Despite the troubles, we had so much fun. :)

New year resolutions, ermm, thought I should be genuinely more selfish like every other human. Haha. It is true. One of the weakness' of mine is that I trust every one who is nice to me even if I know them for a very short time. Another resolution is to study much harder. Not sure if these are going out of the window in a few days. But to be honest, I am not sure if I am actually following my resolutions. LOL.

These are some photos of the fireworks.

hiya, yes dont take any unnecessary risks when travelling. londons quite lucky snow wise as compared to the other counties in England.

Hope your cold gets better.

I wouldn't say be more selfish, but me more analytical in analysing people before you trust them is a better way to put it

Sevva Thosham and Science

At home! Had a good day today. Went to the Shiva Temple as it was PradoshaViradham today. Apparently, it was yesterday in London and today in SriLanka. I had no idea why and when people fast for Pradosham. I only had a slightest idea that it is something like Ekadasi. I got a good opportunity to talk to the priest there about religion, which is quite rare and unusual! I always get questions of why, what and how. And it was a time for me to ask some of the Whys I had in my mind though not everything. It is really amazing how science overlaps religion (in general). There is always a strong scientific aspect behind every feature of Hinduism. It was a delight to sit and listen to the priest about the religion and its science.

One of the interesting things I got to know was about the SevvaiThosham. I did not know much about SevvaThosham before as there was never a talk about it in my family. As the priest explained, a girl with SevvaiThosham should marry a man with the same thosham. And tha…

Female feticide and Sex ratio in India - BMJ

While leafing through the BMJ magazine; June, a letter on one of the articles of sBMJ May urged me to find the May issue and read it. It was about the unwelcome sex in India. I have heard about the high occurrence of female feticide in India but happening to hear a lot in the recent days on magazines and blogs.

The article touched on the dangerous traditions in India which favour for the birth of a boy than girl as boys are cheaper because of the dowry system. The high social and economic value of men is the causation for sex selective abortions in India. Though the dowry payments are illegal, it is accepted as a tradition to continue their family hierarchy and this phenomena is deeply rooted in the societies. Although is illegal to do a prenatal examinations to identify the sex of a fetus is illegal in India, if the families once known it is a girl, the fetus is terminated. According to the article, evidently there were about 5 million female fetuses are aborted every year purely on …

What Saranya means?

Does any of you believe in these kind of quizzes and answers? Stumbled on this site while googling for something else....Though I don't take these serious or believe them, just reading them is often fun :)

What Saranya MeansYou are the total package - suave, sexy, smart, and strong.
You have the whole world under your spell, and you can influence almost everyone you know.
You don't always resist your urges to crush the weak. Just remember, they don't have as much going for them as you do.

You are usually the best at everything ... you strive for perfection.
You are confident, authoritative, and aggressive.
You have the classic "Type A" personality.

You are wild, crazy, and a huge rebel. You're always up to something.
You have a ton of energy, and most people can't handle you. You're very intense.
You definitely are a handful, and you're likely to get in trouble. But your kind of trouble is a lot of fun.

You are very intuitive and wise. You understand the wo…
